The Town Hall building dates from 1826 and the clocktower on the north front was added in 1879. The north porch is probably contemporary with the tower.
A plaque on the corner of the building reads:
Built on the market place in
1827 by Earl Grosvenor who owned
most of Shaftsbury, it replaced the
open-arched New Guild Hall.
Clock tower added
in 1879.
The clock has a white face with roman numeral hours. The outer ring has divisions for minutes.
