Constable Flynn was shot dead & his murder was reported in the Lithgow Mercury on 10 March 1924 as:
CONSTABLE MURDERED
Constable James Flynn was shot dead at Campbelltown yesterday afternoon. An engineer named Clift was at the same time seriously wounded. Flynn was conveying a prisoner from Cordeaux Dam in a motor driven by Clift. It is alleged that a revolver was drawn and the shots fired as the car reached Campbelltown.
Guy Charles Clift, the driver of the car in the Campbelltown tragedy, died at six o'clock the following Monday morning. George William Simpson (34) was brought before the Camden police court and charged with the murder of Constable Flynn and Clift.
His headstone is heavily stained but reads:
In loving memory of our dear son & brother

9 March 1924 aged 26 years.
