I found a press report under the surname of Shepherd which was published in the Labor Daily on 10 May 1929. It states:
MINER'S CRITICAL INJURIES
EXPLOSION BREAKS WALL
Lithgow. Thursday.
A serious accident at the Colliery Vale of Clwydd No. 2 to-day saw an explosion breaking through an intervening wall. Arthur Shepherd, miner, of Lithgow was working when the wall shattered and pieces of coal struck Shepherd causing serious injury. Shepherd received extensive lacerations to the chest, arms and head, and had his right arm broken. Fractured ribs pierced the lungs. Lithgow ambulance took the unfortunate man to the hospital in a critical condition.
His headstone is worded:
