Their death was reported by The Farmer & Settler, Sydney on 20 March 1923 as:

TWO CHILDREN DROWNED.

Mother's Narrow Escape

A double drowning tragedy occurred at the small arms factory dam at Lithgow on Saturday, the victims being Cecil James McMahon, aged six years, and Harold George McMahon, four years of age, sons of Mr. and Mrs. A. O. McMahon, of Littleton Village.

The younger boy slipped into the dam and his brother attempted to rescue him. The mother of the boys was in formed and rushing to tho dam she plunged into the water, but was soon in difficulties. She was dragged ashore by her hair by Mrs. Burton and a boy, and was unconscious when taken from the water.
