The Australian War Memorial records that he was a Gunner with the 4th Australian Medium Trench Mortar Battery. His date of embarkation was 11 November 1916 & he met his fate on 9 May 1918 in France.

His headstone is damaged but the wording is clear:

John Stephen
Only son of John & Elizabeth Macrae
Killed in France 9 May 1918
Aged 28 years.
Type of Death Listed: Killed by something

Cause of death inscription on headstone: Killed in Action - France
