In 1924 an avenue of 26 Monterey Cypress pines had been planted as a memorial to the 26 soldiers of Lakes Entrance that went to The Great War, but didn't make it back again. When the trees became aged and diseased, and were in need of removal, the local chainsaw artist stepped in, and created a lasting memorial.
Chainsaw engraved into the side of the stump is:
"Simpson helping a wounded soldier to where his donkey and another patient waits
Carved by John Brady
[Month] 1998"
* As this is part of a local Multi-Geocache, you will have to come and find that month out yourself *
The 'waiting soldier' appears to be holding a kerosene tin in one hand, and a ammo tin in his right hand. The detail is truly amazing.
Like each of the other sculptures, there is a sign (but this attached to the stump, and rather brown from the treatment of the stump), which reads:
"These Sculptures Honour The Memory of First World War Dead And Injured
Please treat them with RESPECT
Lakes Entrance RSL"
I would rate it 5/5 "Tears", as I always get emotional when I visit, and think about the sacrifice others have made for 'my' Freedom.
