Robert Best & Richard Whiting were brothers who both met their death by a fall from their horse.

Robert was accidentally killed by a fall from his horse on 18 June 1862 & Richard on 13 May 1864. Both were riding from Goulburn to Taralga, a distance of 27 miles (44 kilometres today).
The headstone is behind a iron fence which has protected it from vandalism which has affected many graves in this the original cemetery in Goulburn.
The inscription for Robert is:
Robert Best Whiting the beloved son of Joseph and Sarah Whiting
Born in Cornwall England July 10th 1840
Accidentally killed by a fall from his horse on his way from Goulburn to Taralga
June 18th 1862
Aged 21 years and 11 months.
For Richard:
Also Richard Whiting
Brother of the above
Born in Parramatta July 26th 1848
Who was likewise accidentally killed by a fall from his horse on his way from Goulburn to Taralga May 13th 1864
Aged 15 years and 9 months
There is an article in the Goulburn Herald dated 21 June 1862 about Robert's death. It is reproduced by Trove Digitised Newspapers, National Library of Australia although the computerised version is impossible to decipher & it is easier just to read the article.
His brother's death was reported by the Queanbeyan Age and General Advertisers on 19 May 1864 here: (
