In 2000, Lindsborg decided to cast the traditional Dala shape in large fiberglass forms – an idea patterned after Chicago’s cows on Michigan avenue. Local people and folks with Lindsborg connections sponsor each Wild Dala. Each is unconventionally decorated by one on the towns many local artists. Each new horse is feted in a public unveiling party complete with street theater and parody songs sung by the crowd.

Methodism’s founder, the Rev. John Wesley, rode 250,000 miles on a horse as a circuitriding minister. His brother Charles composed many Christian hymns. Local artist Maleta Forsberg acknowledged both men in sponsoring and decorating a horse for Trinity United Methodist Church.
One side shows John Wesley on a horse. John was born in 1703 in England. He nearly died in a fire at the age of five. His father believed God saved John to fulfill a great destiny. In 1735 he and his brother Charles left England to preach in Savannah, Georgia. On the way a rough storm caused John to wonder about his faith and become inspired when he saw a group of deeply religious passengers sing and pray during the storm rather than become fearful.
Charles returned to England in less than six months. John served for almost two years in Savannah preaching to the Christians and working on converting Native Americans. Historians recognize a book written by John as the first Anglican hymnal published in America. Church attendance grew but not as much as he wished. In Savannah, John fell in love with a woman who later married someone else. A scandal erupted over John denying to give her communion. He said she failed to indicate she wanted communion but she said he remained bitter about their relationship. John returned to England when the conflict remained unresolved. He would marry late in life but his wife left him. Mostly due to his constant travels through his preaching. He was known for traveling hence the picture here of him on a horse.
John returned to England disillusioned. He began speaking with missionaries of different religions. He and Charles began to preach outside which was not allowed by the Church of England. To the Methodists reaching people mattered more than the rule they should preach in a church. John continued working outside the Church of England by appointing his own preachers and setting up churches. At the same time John and Charles would not leave the Church of England. They wanted to reform the Church not start a new religion however Methodists would break away from the Church of England.
