In 1943, the Dorchester was torpedoed off of Greenland and four chaplains gave up their lifebelts to save four GI's who did not have theirs. This incident has been many times, including on US Postage Stamps, as well as here in this very nice garden area.

At the four compass points are the individual statues of the chaplains - George Lansing Fox, Alexander David Goode, Clark Vandersall Poling, and John Patrick Washington. A hedge then separates each of the statues and only allows entry either at the east or west end. Within the center are four benches, landscaping, a stone "book" holds an inscription and there is a flagpole with an American flag. The inscription reads:

THE GARDEN OF THE FOUR CHAPLAINS

This place is respectfully dedicated to their deed of Love and Unselfishness.

HOW IT HAPPENED

On February 3, 1943 the troop transport Dorchester was torpedoed off the coast of Greenland.

As the ship went down, carrying with it to an icy grave these clergymen. They clasped hands and prayed. There we have a living picture of Faith and Unity personified. They died that others might live. As Christ died that we might live eternally.

There were four men left on the ship beside the clergymen, who had lifebelts, but the GI's had not their own with them. Without a moments' hesitation, these four clergymen gave their own lifebelts to the GI's.

Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friend.
