In 2000, Lindsborg decided to cast the traditional Dala shape in large fiberglass forms – an idea patterned after Chicago’s cows on Michigan avenue. Local people and folks with Lindsborg connections sponsor each Wild Dala. Each is unconventionally decorated by one on the towns many local artists. Each new horse is feted in a public unveiling party complete with street theater and parody songs sung by the crowd.

Both U.S. and Swedish flags marches onto the scene. The design by Dan Gottneid makes you want to salute.
Both the Swedish and United States flags fly high as this wild Dala horse called Yankee Doodle Dala. Sponsored by Duane & Kally Tuttle. I’m counting on you recognizing the U.S. flag. Walking through town you may already have seen the Sweden flag. Most of the horse’s head is painted per the Swedish flag. Fans of Big Bang Theory may notice the colors match the flag Sheldon designed for his apartment, blue and yellow. Sweden’s flag consists of a blue background and a bright yellow Nordic cross. A story about the cross comes from Eric the Saint in 1157. The legend says Eric saw a golden cross in the sky when he landed in Finland with his army to spread Christianity. He told the Finish to convert or fight. They fought and Eric the Saint won. While he sounds fanatical in the story after the battle he looked at the dead and cried over all the lost souls. Afterwards he used his vision to design the flag.
That legend goes back to 1157. Too far back for historians to prove the legend. Other stories are not nearly as dramatic. One theory says Denmark’s flag inspired the Sweden’s flag who added their national colors of blue and yellow. Another story says the design came from King Charles VIII’s coat of arms in the 1440s. Other evidence shows the flag’s design used to be a white cross instead of yellow cross until around 1520. Historians point to 1562 as the first year a documented description of the flag matches Sweden’s flag today.
The flag from 1562 to today was not always Sweden’s official flag. The flag changed from 1844 to 1905. That design combined Sweden’s flag with Norway’s flag during the years the two countries formed a union. Now Sweden’s flag symbolizes truth, loyalty, and justice with the blue background and generosity with the yellow cross.
The United States’s flag history is also a little confusing and that is much more recent. The U.S. went through many designs before arriving at the one today. One design wanted every state represented by a star and a stripe. Could you imagine our flag with 50 stripes? It would just look pink from a distance.
