In 2000, Lindsborg decided to cast the traditional Dala shape in large fiberglass forms – an idea patterned after Chicago’s cows on Michigan avenue. Local people and folks with Lindsborg connections sponsor each Wild Dala. Each is unconventionally decorated by one on the towns many local artists. Each new horse is feted in a public unveiling party complete with street theater and parody songs sung by the crowd.

Artist Jennifer Hopp richly bestowed Blossom with flowers, a traditional symbol of Midsummer’s Day. Flowers are fashioned into crowns called blomkrans, both in Lindsborg and Sweden. Sponsored by the Lindsborg Arts Council.
This Dala horse is painted yellow with small flowers and named Blossom. The flowers are a nod to Midsummer’s Day, holiday second only to Christmas in importance to Sweden. At first Swedes celebrated Midsummer Day on the longest day of the year. Then Christianity gave it the date June 24th and lumped John the Baptist with it. Now in Sweden it’s always on the weekend not a certain day. Swedes arrange flowers, similar to ones painted on the horse, into crowns called midsommarkrans. Midsummer festival celebrates fertility i.e. people getting it on. One tradition said single Swedish women should pick flowers by crossing fences with one flower picked from each garden. The woman would not speak once she picked her seven flowers. The arrangement would be placed under her pillow where she would dream of the man she would marry. People already married wanted to conceive a child that night believing the child would be strong and have a good life. The maypole they danced around would have greenery around it and two loops on either side so between the pole and the loops it resembled a giant penis and testicles. Swedish ancestors were not shy about sex as that is where the babies come from. The Swedes adopted the greenery on the maypole from the Germans. One popular dance around the maypole today involves hopping around the pole singing about frogs. Then they sing the song again hopping around the maypole in the opposite direction. Before you think that’s silly remember we do the Chicken Dance at weddings. People eat lots of food at the Midsummer festival, but strawberries are very important. Also important is vodka or nubbe.
