The golf club at Ballater was founded in 1892 with a 9 hole course built on land owned by the Laird of Invercauld. Land purchased in 1905 extended the course to the present 18 holes.
Despite the highland setting, the course is relatively flat with gentle undulations alongside a loop in the River Dee, which never really comes into play. The course has many trees dotted around and lots of whin bushes, especially near the river.
The course is very close to the centre of town, with a putting green and a bowling green close by.
