In 2000, Lindsborg decided to cast the traditional Dala shape in large fiberglass forms – an idea patterned after Chicago’s cows on Michigan avenue. Local people and folks with Lindsborg connections sponsor each Wild Dala. Each is unconventionally decorated by one on the towns many local artists. Each new horse is feted in a public unveiling party complete with street theater and parody songs sung by the crowd.

Gyllene (Golden) Dala’s coat depicts the Bank of Tescott’s 125-pus years of rootedness in Kansas & its people, & its recognition of the valve of rural places. With sun shining & white clouds Golden Dala reminds us of the golden KS landscape upon which we all call for meaning and support. Sponsored by Bank of Tescott.
Gyllene Dala or Golden Dala on one side shows growing wheat. There is a shining sun painted on the horse’s butt, which is a little funny given all the sayings referring to the butt as where the sun don’t shine. The other side shows some wheat and corn with a red barn. The birds flying near the barn are a little ominous to me maybe because of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie The Birds. Birds do eat farmer’s crops. That’s the reason for scarecrows. In 1874 however Kansas needed a lot more birds to eat the locusts’ swarms that ruined entire crops in a matter of hours. Farmers couldn’t even hope to save their crop instead they would rush to make sure they covered the well to at least preserve their water. Newspapers even nicknamed it the Year of the Locust due to the damage.
There’s a barbed wire fence on the poor horse’s legs. It’s painted on, but still. Ouch! Barbed wire became one of the most valuable pieces of equipment to the farmers in Lindsborg. Cowboys rode cattle through here without any regard for the farmers’ crops. The Swedish settlers at first feared the Kansa Indians with many stories circulating about attacks on pioneers. As time went on they learned the Kansa Indians were mostly peaceful and it was the cowboy’s cattle causing the most trouble. Despite the peaceful scenes on this Dala Horse, farming isn’t for the weak or easily discouraged. The Lindsborg farmers worked hard to farm the land.
