In 2000, Lindsborg decided to cast the traditional Dala shape in large fiberglass forms – an idea patterned after Chicago’s cows on Michigan avenue. Local people and folks with Lindsborg connections sponsor each Wild Dala. Each is unconventionally decorated by one on the towns many local artists. Each new horse is feted in a public unveiling party complete with street theater and parody songs sung by the crowd.

Painted by Shirley Malm. This is the 33rd Wild Dala sculpture and is painted a deep blue with traditional Swedish floral designs.
“After recognizing what it meant to the community and the fact that the community just opened its arms and brought us in, really there was no other decision to be made. We were going to have a Dala — we were going to be part of the Dala Herd,” Burns said.
A contest was held to choose the name for the Dala, and out of more than 60 entries, the name that was chosen was “Millie Gram.” The name was selected because of the intentional pun on “milligram,” a common term in pharmacy work, according to Burns.
