In 2000, Lindsborg decided to cast the traditional Dala shape in large fiberglass forms – an idea patterned after Chicago’s cows on Michigan avenue. Local people and folks with Lindsborg connections sponsor each Wild Dala. Each is unconventionally decorated by one on the towns many local artists. Each new horse is feted in a public unveiling party complete with street theater and parody songs sung by the crowd.

This is the only Dala horse with a rider. This one is named Dalamation. Many of you may associate Dalmatians to the U.S. but their roots trace back to Croatia. As demonstrated here Dalmatians are linked to firefighters. That partnership has nothing to do with fire. Dalmatians, like any other dog, have no desire to burn up. It comes from a 1700s discovery that Dalmatians and horses are amazingly compatible. Given the size difference you would think the horse protects the dog, but it is the other way around. People trained Dalmatians to run alongside horses pulling carriages (they are great runners) and chase away any barking dogs that might frighten the horses. The Dalmatians also slept near the horses for the purpose of barking and alerting the owner if someone tried to steal the horses. Before fire engine, horses carried carts full of fireman, ladders, water tanks, etc. to the fire. Horses helped transport equipment however they fear fire to the point they panic. No amount of training would convince a horse to run towards a fire. After all they have horse sense. Anyone who doesn’t know, horse sense is another way of saying common sense. Back to firefighters. Firefighters needed something to calm the horses. That is where horses’ favorite bodyguard, the Dalmatian, entered the picture. The Dalmatian, guided the horses to the fire. The dog stayed with the horses keeping them calm and barking if anyone tried to steal the horses or the supplies on the cart. Firefighters used some of the best horses which would have tempted some really immoral thieves. Also when a fire alarm sounded, the Dalmatians would run out of the firehouse, barking to let bystanders know that they should get out of the way because the firefighters’ wagon would soon come roaring by. The firefighter here is named Sven. In medieval Sweden, Sven meant squire.
This Dala piece by Ken Sjögren and Ken Swisher of the Hemslöjd. What would a firefighter - or a dog - be without a hydrant?
