The name of the pub is in fact a pun on the words beer engine. A beer engine is the device that pumps the beer from the barrel when a hand pump is used.

This pub is in a small building down a side street and advertises itself as Skipton's first and original micropub. It is so small that there is no cellar and the barrels are stored on a shelf behind the bar.

It is in the CAMRA real ale guide and the pub claims that 'The Beer Engine is a place of Real Ale, Real People and Real Entertainment. We don't do TV, Radio or silly Bandit Machines its just plain and simple banter.
