Charles Joseph La Trobe (or Latrobe) (20 March 1801 – 4 December 1875) was appointed in 1839 as superintendent of the Port Phillip District of New South Wales and after the establishment in 1851 of the colony of Victoria he became its first lieutenant-governor.
La Trobe visited the area regularly from 1840 until he left in 1854,in 1844 he built a house at Shortland Bluff which he renamed Queenscliff in 1853 after Queen Victoria
