Lathamstowe was built by brewer Edward Latham in 1882-83 to the design of William J Ellis, specifically for the use of the Anglican clergy and their families as a seaside holiday residence.
The two storey building actually consists of two identical Italianate residences that meet at a corner tower. The tower is accessable from the first floor of both residences by a spiral staircase to the widows walk, from where there are views of The Rip and the ships entering and leaving Port Phillip Bay
