"È la chiesa del Concilio di Trento: a S. Maria Maggiore si svolsero le congregazioni preparatorie di tutto il terzo periodo, dall’aprile del 1562 al dicembre del 1563. Fu fatta costruire dal vescovo-principe Bernardo Clesio tra il 1520 e il 1524 su progetto di Antonio Medaglia sulle vestigia del Foro della Tridentum romana, su cui forse poggiano le fondamenta della prima chiesa episcopale della diocesi di Trento dal IV al IX secolo d.C. All’impianto della chiesa romanica fu sostituita una chiesa a navata unica, voltata a botte, senza transetto: è una esplicita riproposta della mantovana chiesa di Sant´Andrea di Leon Battista Alberti, che Clesio conosceva direttamente.
Probabilmente fu un intervento dovuto anche a motivazioni politiche, per la volontà del principe-vescovo di allinearsi alle tendenze culturali del Rinascimento italiano contro la tradizione romanico-gotica più legata alle corti centro europee. La chiesa fu arricchita nei secoli con opere di grande valore: la cantoria del Grandi, la porta laterale sud, gli affreschi di Martin Teofilo Polacco, le pale del Cignaroli e del Moroni, gli altari dei lapicidi degli architetti Sartori e Benedetti." "Santa Maria Maggiore is the church of the Council of Trento. Preparatory congregations through its third stage - from April of 1562 to December of 1563 - were held here. The church was built by the Prince-Bishop Bernardo Clesio between 1520 and 1524, based on a project by Antonio Medaglia. The church was built over the remains of the Forum of Roman Tridentum, where the foundations of the first Episcopal church of Trento Diocese from the 4th to the 9th century might be found. This Romanesque church was replaced by a church with a single nave, a barrel vault and no transept. It was an explicit answer to the Church of Sant'Andrea by Leon Battista Alberti - known personally by Clesio - in Mantua.
The intervention was also probably due to political reasons, since the Prince-Bishop wanted to follow the cultural trends of the Italian Renaissance, as opposed to the Romanesque-Gothic tradition of central European courts." (visit link)
