"The bell displayed here is from the USS Cape Johnson, launched February 20, 1943, serving the Pacific Theater as a troop transportation and cargo ship. The merchant marine act of 1936, enacted by the 74th congress of the united states on June 29, 1936, created the US Merchant Marines and the US Maritime Service to Services as a Naval or military auxiliary in time of war or national emergency. This bell signifies the bravery and dedication of Mariners who served in the US Merchant Marine Service. Dedicated May 22, 2010 - National Maritime Day. "
