The bridge was built in 1908 to allow the construction of the secondary railway line with metric gauge of the departmental network called Petit Anjou, between Angers and Candé.
On August 8, 1944, the Allied troops, commanded by General Patton, arrived near Angers. The German forces blew the bridges across Maine the day before. Two young Frenchmen, Louis Bordier and Pierre-Yves Labbe, went to Saint-Jean-de-Linières, where the American forces were stationed, to inform them of the existence of the Pruniers bridge which had not yet been destroyed by the enemy . Nevertheless, a wagon full of explosives had been placed in the middle of this bridge by the Germans in order to be able to blow it up. With the information gathered, the Americans neutralized the German guard and took possession of the viaduct. This allowed the Allied forces to cross Maine and take the enemy troops back. Angers thus avoided an aerial bombardment. The German occupation forces withdrew very temporarily from the town of Sainte-Gemmes-sur-Loire, where they were dislodged after violent fighting due to a German counter-attack, which failed but caused the loss of more than a hundred American infantrymen.
The Angers - Candé line will be permanently closed on 20 August 1947. The bridge is now reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.
In the late 1980s, a stela was erected on the left bank in honor of the American troops which liberated Angers in 1944.2 On 7 August 1994 two other stelae were raised on the right bank (esplanade Louis Bordier) as a tribute to the soldiers General Patton and the French Resistance.

Le pont fut construit en 1908, afin de permettre la réalisation de la ligne de chemin de fer secondaire à voie métrique du réseau départemental dit Petit Anjou, entre Angers et Candé.
Le 8 août 1944, les troupes alliées, commandées par le général Patton, arrivent près d'Angers. Les forces allemandes ont fait sauter, la veille, l'ensemble des ponts enjambant la Maine. Deux jeunes français, Louis Bordier et Pierre-Yves Labbe se rendent à Saint-Jean-de-Linières, où stationnent les forces américaines, pour les renseigner sur l'existence du pont de Pruniers qui n'est pas encore détruit par l'ennemi. Néanmoins, un wagon bourré d'explosifs avait été placé au milieu de ce pont par les Allemands afin de pouvoir le faire sauter. Grâce aux informations recueillies, les Américains neutralisent la garde allemande et prennent possession du viaduc. Cela permit aux forces alliées de traverser la Maine et de prendre à revers les troupes ennemies. Angers évita ainsi un bombardement aérien. Les forces d'occupation allemande se retirèrent très provisoirement sur la commune de Sainte-Gemmes-sur-Loire où elles furent délogées après de violents combats dus à une contre-attaque allemande, qui échoua mais causa la perte de plus d'une centaine de fantassins américains1.
La ligne Angers - Candé sera définitivement fermée le 20 août 1947. Désormais, le pont est réservé aux piétons et aux cyclistes.
Vers la fin des années 1980, une stèle a été érigée sur la rive gauche en hommage aux troupes américaines ayant libéré Angers en 19442. Le 7 août 1994 deux autres stèles ont été levées sur la rive droite (esplanade Louis Bordier) en hommage aux soldats du général Patton et à la Résistance Française.
