The War Memorial Library is an example of the Interwar Gothic style in the simplified Gothic detailing evident in the front portal with its large pointed arch and unorthodox tracery (Criterion D.2). Its placement on a central axis and its octagonal sculptural massing make it a focus and integral part of the planning of the school (Criterion F.1).
Description
The library is an example of the Interwar Gothic style with typical details such as pinnacles, crenellated parapet, lancet windows and a entrance portal with unusual tracery. The building has stone dressings around the windows, doors and parapets and face brick walls. The interior has a timber lined ceiling, with trusses supporting the roof. The are twelve memorial windows each engraved in stained and painted glass and made by the Decorative Glass Company. The building is an integral part of the school plan in its central placement on an axis surrounded by other buildings, the older of which are similar in style and materials. These buildings include the Administration Block, Library and Hall and one other building not named on the plan. It was designed by the architect John E Barr in association with A E Brooks. A John Barr also designed St Andrew's Church, Canberra in the same Interwar Gothic style.
