The Village of Abbey
Century of Change

On September 2nd 1913, Abby was incorporated as a Village on land purchased by the CPR from D.F. Kennedy, who named the village after the family farm in Ireland. In 1913 Abbey became home to a hotel, a store (Gaines & Bolsover), post office, bank and first elevator, a school building by 1915 and a church in 1918. The first garage was built by Nordal Thompson and the first implement agency by Denis Kennedy. Growth continued and at its peak the Village had grocery stores, machinery dealerships, restaurants, lumberyards, garages, six elevators, barbershop and a pool hall. The Village was devastated by fires in both 1919 and 1921, losing a livery barn and many businesses. A tribute to the pioneer spirit as the town was rebuilt and continues to survive.

In 2013, 100 years later, the Village has a short line ag business, garage, grocery store, service station, hotel-bar, insurance agent, post office, library, curling rink, skating rink, golf course, ball diamonds, United Church, Legion Hall, Heritage Villa senior housing, and plans are in progress to renovate the former school building into a recreation and business centre.
