This Pieta statue is in St. Gregory Cemetery on Route 20 in North East, PA.

The Pieta depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, after He was taken down from the cross. While not specifically mentioned in the Gospels, this scene is a very famous in artwork and is often incorporated into the thirteenth Station of the Cross (Jesus is taken down from the Cross).

The Blessed Virgin Mary was a young girl, betrothed to St. Joseph, when she was visited by the angel Gabriel who announced to her that she would conceive a son by the Holy Ghost, who was to be the Son of God. This Son, Jesus, at around the age of 30, spent three years preaching in Judea before being arrested and crucified. He rose again on the third day, appearing to many of His disciples and commanding them to go preach the gospel throughout the world.
