The Carter County Courthouse is a beautiful building, constructed in 1910. The south entrance has double doors and a transom, surrounded by pink granite.

Above this south entrance is a block that is inscribed: "The punishment can be remitted the crime is everlasting. OVID" This means we may choose to lay aside or slacken the punishment for a deed, but it remains a crime nevertheless forever.

Ovid (43 B.C. - 17 A.D.) was a Roman poet. To read some of his other quotations, (visit link)
