This bench is located next to the Michael Millennium Stone in a paved area next to Main Road at its Junction with Slieau Curn Park in the village of Kirk Michael. Maurice lived on Sileau Curn Park with his wife Sandra.

The bench of pine has 4-slate seat, a 3-slate backrest and 2 armrests. The dedication is carved in to the upper 2 slates of the backrest while the lower slate of the backrest has an attractive Manx Celtic design.

The dedication is as follows:
In Loving Memory of Maurice Nelson
14 September 1941 – 29 July 2015

Maurice was 73 years of age when he died in Isle of Man Hospice on Saturday 25th July 2015.

He had been diagnosed with colon cancer in November 2013 and began chemotherapy treatment on the NHS (National Health Service) until his family offered to pay for private treatment.

Following a statement in November 2014, in in the House of Keys, one of the Chambers of Tynwald the Isle of Man’s Parliament, by Minister Howard Quayle that the Isle of Man would not be setting up an Isle of Man Cancer Drug Fund (CDF) to help cancer patients, like Maurice, meet the cost of their drugs he told the BBC that he felt bitter.

The CDF was set up in England in 2011, to help patient access certain drugs before they have NHS approval.

Maurice’s family, when he spoke to the BBC, was paying over £2,000 a month for private treatment for a drug (Avastin) that had Maurice lived in England would have been paid for by the CDF.
