The memorial is on a stone pedestal. The black on the front reads: "A Tribute. To 1920-1930 founders of this community. World War I Veterans, homesteaders and their families - posterity will recognize their vision, fortitude, initiative. Presented by Veterans of World War 1 Barracks No 2337 and friends. Twentynine Palms, California - 1976."

On top of the memorial is a shovel in the ground with a lizard. On the handle is a note that reads "The waterboy andshovel were essential to Twentynine Palms pioneers in the humble tasks in the frontier land."
