As the plaque reads:
The first settlers, from France and Quebec followed the winding prairie trails, miles of rolling hills and dreams of a better life to homestead in this Valley 'The Valley of Marie' or Val Marie. The village of Val Marie sprung up when the Canadian Pacific Railway lines were laid down in 1924. The first buildings in Val Marie were a livery barn, a blacksmith shop, a general store and a post office followed by a grain elevator and a red brick school house. Some of these buildings are still standing today. The Val Marie Village Square is located where the livery barn once stood. Can you picture yourself on the main street of this bustling wild west town in the 1940's?
