The 1855 monument to Capt. William Halsted Poole of the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers, is a marble tablet engraved with black lettering. It is flanked by two pillars and surmounted by a ornate Gothic canopy with five pillars. It is mounted on the wall inside St Michael's Church in Marbury. (visit link)

The inscription reads as follows;

" IN MEMORY OF
WILLIAM HALSTED POOLE.
CAPTAIN 23RD ROYAL WELSH FUSILIERS.
WHO HAVING LANDED WITH HID REGIMENT IN
THE CRIMEA, AND HAVING BEEN PRESENT WITH IT AT
THE BATTLES OF THE ALMA, AND OF INKERMANN
AND DURING THE WHOLE PERIOD OF THE
SEIGE OPERATIONS BEFORE SEBASTOPOL, FELL
DANGEROUSLY WOUNDED WHILST AMONG THE
FOREMOST, GALLANTLY LEADING HIS MEN
IN THE FINAL ASSAULT OF THE PLACE
ON THE 8TH SEPTEMBER 1855.
AND DIED ON THE 24TH FOLLOWING
AGED 20 YEARS.
THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY HIS BEREAVED FATHER -
HIS ONLY SURVIVING PARENT."
