Mankota Coal Mines
Several Southern Saskatchewan Areas contains varying amounts of coal deposits. The Mankota area had several small coal mining operations, dating from 1914 to the early 1960's.
Chief among them were the Johnson/Hubert, Porter and Brown/McCleary mines; located SW 1/4 11-3-8 W3M, SE 1/4 17-3-8 W3M, SE 1/4 18-3-8 W3M, respectively.
The mines were operated on a small scale by various individual or families. The product represented a low quality lignite that was usually sold locally.
This coal cart was used in the "Brown" mine and is intended as a tribute to the mining endeavors in the Mankota District.
Erected in 1994 by Mr. Don Wilkins, Girvin.
