The 'bone-coloured' sign at the end of the chicken-wire-covered wooden boardwalk reads:

" Gold comes to Stratford"
"The 1860s were boom times for Stratford thanks to the mineral goldfield at Grant, Dargo, and Crooked River. Gold seekers travelled from Melbourne through Port Albert and the Gippsland Lakes and then by small steamers along the Avon River, which was a much narrower and deeper waterway than it is now.

"Goods and passengers were unloaded at Redbank, a little further downstream from this point. From Stratford, cargo travelled to the goldfields on pack horses and mules.

"To cater for demand, many local businesses started during this time in Stratford including bootmakers, bakeries, carriers, hotels, saddlers, and blacksmiths. Churches representing most denominations and a school were also established. A water-driven flour mill powered by the flow of the Avon River was located 2 km upstream from this site.

"By 1961, seven hundred miners had invaded the once silent gullies and creeks north of Stratford to seek their fortune in gold.

"Once gold supplies dwindles, miners took a keen interest in land legislation and formed the Land Reform League. Time spent on the goldfields was an attempt for many miners to make enough money to establish themselves. Miners to lobby for land to be made available for selection."
