The origins of the Church are unclear but the first historical reference to a Church in Ballaugh is in a papal bull of Pope Gregory IX of 1231. The earliest recorded Rector of the Church, Donald Mc Corkyll in 1408 so many of the graves in the churchyard must be unmarked

Of the marked graves, many date from the early 19th century as the New Church replaced this Church in 1832 and more recent burials were interred in the churchyard of the New Church.

Archaeological work at the Old Church has uncovered a grave containing a sword and spear while the Church today houses a runic stone (the only one found in the Parish of Ballaugh) which in all likelihood comes from the churchyard. The runic inscription on the stone reads ‘Olaf Liotulfson raised this stone in memory of Ulf, his son’.
