The church was built in the 13th century. On April 6, 1548, the church of Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher was the scene of a tragic event: the nave where the inhabitants of the village had taken refuge was burnt by the soldiery who had massacred 130 people there.
Its bell tower, completed by a slender roof covered with slates, served in the 18th century as a reference point during measurements for the realization of the Cassini map.
The church is protected as a historic monument by order of 1 April 1910. During the Second World War the German Army set up an observation post at the top of the bell tower and installed a machine gun by D.C.A.
The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption was built in stone in the 13th century according to a traditional basilical plan. It is composed of a nave, a transept and a choir.
A sundial, which once fitted the south face of the building, is still somewhat visible under favorable conditions (sunny daylight). The belfry culminates at 45 m, its spire covered with slate is 20 m long.

L'église a été construite au XIIIe siècle. Le 6 avril 1548, l'église d'Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher fut le théâtre d'un événement tragique : la nef où s'étaient réfugiés des habitants du village fut incendiée par la soldatesque qui y avait massacré 130 personnes.
Son clocher terminé par un toit en flèche effilée recouverte d'ardoises, a servi au XVIIIe siècle comme point de repère lors de mesurages pour la réalisation de la carte de Cassini.
L'église est protégée au titre des monuments historiques : classement par arrêté du 1er avril 1910. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'armée allemande établit un poste d'observation en haut du clocher et y installa une mitrailleuse de D.C.A.
L'église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption a été construite en pierre au XIIIe siècle selon un plan basilical traditionnel. Elle est composée d'une nef, d'un transept et d'un chœur.
Un cadran solaire, qui équipait jadis la face sud de l'édifice, est encore un peu visible dans des conditions favorables (lumière rasante de fin de journée ensoleillée). Le clocher culmine à 45 m, sa flèche recouverte d'ardoise mesure 20 m de long.
