Between the WWI-war monument and the WWII (counter) monument stands this deserter monument since November 2015.
This memorial serves as a reminder of the victims of the Nazi Military Justice in the Second World War in general and, in particular, the 227 specially known deserters.
Volker Langs (sculptor) Deserteurdenkmal is a flat, isosceles, triangular, filigree housing. Two sides of the structure consist of bronze light- and air-permeable grids, which are formed from fonts. They are formed from a quotation by Helmut Heißenbüttel from Germany in 1944. The third side of the triangular structure towards the Dammtordamm is a closed concrete wall. Inside the housing, on the concrete walls, there are general historical information on deserters in German and English. Furthermore, the name, the date of execution and the place of execution of the deserters can be called up acoustically by pressing the name blocks at the push of a button.
