This tall Southern Magnolia tree shades the Confederate lion and the graves of over 300 unknown Confederate dead, who were excavated from trench mass graves at battle sites near Atlanta and reinterred here around 1870.
A plaque at the tree reads as follows:
"OAKLAND'S CONFEDERATE MAGNOLIA
"To everything there is a season,
And a time to every purpose under the heavens:
A time to be born, and a time to die; A time
2 plant, and a time to pluck up that planted."
Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
Over 100 years old, origin unknown, but duties well done. Guardian of the unknown Confederate dead, sheltering arms for Atlanta's beloved Lion. Never to be forgotten, but living through those left behind.
