"Fondée par Bertin au VIIe siècle, sur une île au bord du marais, l'ancienne abbaye Saint-Bertin est le berceau de la ville. Elle fut l'une des plus puissantes et prestigieuses abbayes du nord de la France.
La légende raconte que l'environnement se révélant hostile, Audomar - canonisé sous le nom d'Omer - et ses disciples, Bertin, Momelin et Ebertamne, décident, à leur arrivée à Sithiu, de s'en remettre à la providence pour trouver un lieu d'implantation au monastère. Ils prennent place à bord d'une barque et se laissent guider par les eaux jusqu'à échouer au pied de la colline de Sithiu. Nous sommes au VIIe siècle et ils fondent un monastère dont les sanctuaires sont dédiés aux saints Pierre et Paul. Bertin est placé à la tête de l'abbaye qui deviendra, après sa mort en 709, abbaye Saint-Bertin.
L'abbaye Saint-Bertin connaît trois états successifs. À la première église succède l'édifice roman dont subsistent des chapiteaux et les fragments d'une mosaïque, conservés au musée Sandelin. Le chantier de la nouvelle église gothique dure ensuite plus de deux siècles. Ses dimensions sont impressionnantes : 122 mètres de long, 30 mètres de large à la hauteur du choeur, 40 mètres au transept et 25 mètres de hauteur sous voûte.
Une maquette, également conservée au musée Sandelin, rend bien compte de cette dernière construction et du chantier, qui s'échelonna de 1325 à 1520. Depuis début avril, une autre maquette, à ciel ouvert cette fois, conçue par l'orfèvre Patrick Chupin, se dresse en face des ruines. Elle aussi témoigne de la grandeur passée de l'abbaye Saint-Bertin.
En 1830, la municipalité entreprend en effet la destruction de l'édifice, pour construire le futur hôtel de ville. Une décision qui choque Victor Hugo qui, dans la Revue des deux mondes, en 1832, s'en offusque. « N'y a-t-il pas eu, à Saint-Omer, un préfet qui a détruit aux trois quarts la magnifique abbaye de Saint-Bertin sous prétexte de donner du travail aux ouvriers ? » À l'époque, la municipalité épargne néanmoins la tour occidentale. Qui s'effondrera en 1947, ébranlée par des bombardements. Aujourd'hui, il ne reste plus que l'élévation méridionale de la tour, son portail, et quelques pans de murs de la nef et du transept nord.
Depuis 1996, la ville et l'agence d'urbanisme travaillent sur la restauration et la mise en lecture du site. Cet aménagement voit le jour en 2007. Il reprend, de manière végétale, l'exacte implantation des bâtiments originels de l'abbaye. Des jardins médiévaux y poussent, pour retranscrire la culture du jardinage qui transpirait à l'époque de la création de l'abbaye. Depuis septembre 2007, comme la cathédrale, le site est magnifiquement mis en lumière. En septembre, devrait commencer la cristallisation des ruines (on la libère des végétaux qui y ont élu domicile, on rejointoie les briques), nouvelle étape de sa restauration."
"Founded by Bertin in the seventh century, on an island on the edge of the marsh, the former abbey of Saint-Bertin is the cradle of the city. It was one of the most powerful and prestigious abbeys in northern France.
Legend has it that the environment is hostile, Audomar - canonized under the name of Omer - and his disciples, Bertin, Momelin and Ebertamne, decide, on their arrival in Sithiu, to rely on providence to find a place of settlement at the monastery. They take their places on board a boat and allow themselves to be guided by the waters until they fail at the foot of the hill of Sithiu. We are in the 7th century and they found a monastery whose sanctuaries are dedicated to the saints Peter and Paul. Bertin was placed at the head of the abbey which, after his death in 709, became the abbey of Saint-Bertin.
The abbey of Saint-Bertin knows three successive states. In the first church, the Romanesque edifice, with capitals and fragments of a mosaic, remains in the Sandelin Museum. The site of the new Gothic church then lasted more than two centuries. Its dimensions are impressive: 122 meters long, 30 meters wide at the height of the choir, 40 meters at the transept and 25 meters high under arch.
A model, also preserved in the Sandelin Museum, gives a good account of this last construction and site, which ranged from 1325 to 1520. Since the beginning of April, another model, open sky this time, designed by the goldsmith Patrick Chupin , stands opposite the ruins. It also testifies to the past grandeur of the abbey of Saint-Bertin.
In 1830, the municipality undertook the destruction of the building, to build the future city hall. A decision that shocks Victor Hugo who in the Revue des deux mondes, in 1832, is offended. "Was there not at Saint Omer a prefect who destroyed three-quarters of the magnificent abbey of Saint-Bertin under the pretext of giving work to the workers? At the time, however, the municipality spared the western tower. That will collapse in 1947, shaken by bombing. Today, only the southern elevation of the tower, its portal, and some walls of the nave and northern transept remain.
Since 1996, the city and the urban planning agency have been working on the restoration and reading of the site. This development was launched in 2007. It resumes, in a vegetal way, the exact location of the original buildings of the abbey. Medieval gardens grow there, to transcribe the culture of gardening that transpired at the time of the creation of the abbey. Since September 2007, as the cathedral, the site is beautifully brought to light. In September, the crystallization of the ruins should begin (it is freed from the plants which have chosen to live there, the bricks are rejoined), a new stage in its restoration."
