The Tuskegee Institute Cemetery on the campus of Tuskegee University in Tuskegee AL contains the graves of the first principal of what was then the Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers, the famed educator Booker T. Washington, and its most famous faculty member George Washington Carver, with their families.
In later years, faculty members, college trustees, benefactors, and other prominent Tuskegee graduates are also buried here.
A sign at the cemetery reads as follows:
"TUSKEGEE CEMETERY
More than 8000 people, White and Colored, rich and poor, from the lowliest farm and the richest Fifth Avenue mansion crowded in and around the school chapel to pay homage [to Booker T. Washington]." -- Baltimore Afro-American, November 20, 1915
The bodies of Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and several other former members of the Tuskegee faculty and staff and their families are buried here in the school's cemetery. The university president determines who is buried here."
The day Blasterz visited, we estimated there are about 80 people buried here.
