A sandstone headstone with an angel motif and a bronze plaque set at ground level mark the grave of Revolutionary War Captain Levi Ely of West Springfield, MA. In 1777, he was captain of the 2nd company under Colonel Moseley and in 1780, the 3rd Hampden regiment of the Army of the North under Colonel John Brown of Pittsfield, MA.

Captain Levi Ely left home in charge of a company on a expedition against the Indians in New York. They were sent to Tryon County and stationed at the Fort Paris stockade to protect settlers in the Mohawk Valley from threatening attacks by Tories and Indians. On October 19, 1780, while attempting to join the forces of General Robert Van Rensselaer, they were ambushed by Tories and Indians. He, along with Colonel Brown and half the company, was killed at the Battle of Stone Arabia, NY.
Levi Ely was the is the fifth child of Samuel & Abigail Warriner Ely. He married Abigail Sergeant, the daughter of Lt. John & Abigail Jones Sergeant, on October 12, 1758. They has eleven children: Lucretia, Huldah, Jerusha, Levi, George, Daniel, Sabra, Theodosia, Solomon, Elihu, & Abigail.
