The Familie von Alten is one of the oldest in Lower Saxony. Its branch in the Principality of Calenberg can be traced back to the time of Carls the Great.
Carl von Alten (1764-1840) was a Hanoverian officer, who served in the coalition wars against Napoleon.
By defending the "La Haye Sainte" mansion, he played a major role in the victory of the allies at Waterloo. Carl von Alten was severely wounded in battle. For his merits, he was appointed general and raised to the rank of Count.

After the death of Altens, in 1842 the court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves designed the Mausoleum for the family.
The building fell into ruin over time. Today it is considered the first brick building of Neo-Gothic in northern Germany. The mausoleum has been dismantled since the 1950s, partly by theft. In 2012 an association was founded to save the mausoleum.
