It was built by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (which later became the Great Central Railway), as part of the Chester & Connah's Quay Railway.
It connects trains from Shotton station to Hawarden Bridge, a cast iron truss swing bridge that crossed the River Dee.
The swing bridge was built to allow ships to pass along the River Dee primarily to access the nearby steel works.
Next to the river is a low lying area that acts as a flood plain and this viaduct carries trains over that area before connecting to the swing bridge.
A number of National Cycle Routes and a Long Distance Walking Path converge on the bridge. Some pass under the arches of this bridge whilst National Cycle Route 5 is carried over the River Dee on a footpath attached to the side of the metal swing bridge.
