The Pub website references the Duke of Clarence who went on to become King William IV in 1830 however the Camra's 'What Pub' claims that the sign represents a later Duke, namely the first-born son of the future Edward VII, Albert Victor. This later Duke failed to succeed his father as he died, aged 28, before his father and his grandmother, Queen Victoria.

The Pub Sign shows the Duke in the uniform of a Major in the Royal Hussars. The Duke held of the rank of Major, 10th (Prince of Wales' Own) Royal Hussars.

Camra's 'What Pub' claims that the first licence premises on this site dates from 1724 and was named 'The Coach & Horses'. The Pub was rebuilt in 1892 and again in 1953.
