Signs like this were only permitted after a business was granted the right to display such signage from the local authorities. Originally this Fachwerk building was a tavern named Zum Bären and served as such from 1692-1880. After this period, the tavern was sold to a butcher and remained such a shop ever since.
The sign contains a stylized eagle's head and tulips. When freshly painted, the tulips are red and the foliage green. The Bear is in memory of the original tavern, Zum Bären. The current sign was installed just after WWII, since the first one was damaged when a building across the street was destroyed. The Fam Blum was added ten years after the Blum family bought the butcher shop.
