Over 50 guitars are located in the Guitar Gallery: The Quest for Volume within the Museum of Pop Culture. One of them is a 1935 Gibson experimental guitar. A nearby placard reads:
The earliest surviving electric Gibson, this is the only one of its kind
Shocked by others' success in the electric guitar market, the veteran guitar-manufacturing company began developing electrics in 1935. Gibson sought the creative advice of Alvino Rey, then one of America's most prominent steel guitarists. That trailblazing collaboration produced this experimental instrument. Since Gibson had not yet made an amplifier, tests were conducted through a speaker like the one you see here.
