Over 50 guitars are located in the Guitar Gallery: The Quest for Volume within the Museum of Pop Culture. One of them is a 1920s Stroh Hawaiian guitar. A nearby placard reads:
Augustus Stroh designed the wacky-looking horn mechanism on this Hawaiian-style guitar to create a loud and focused sound.
Not Surprisingly, the tone is quite metallic, but the increased volume was especially useful for wax-cylinder recording in the years before the invention of electromagnetic microphones.
The bridge of this instrument is connected to an aluminum diaphragm that directs the amplified sound through the large movable horn--very similar to the mechanical amplification device used in (can't read).
