Queen of Heaven was consecrated in 1947. Currently, the cemetery is 472 acres (1.91 km2) in size, and there are currently over 122,451 people buried there. There are approximately 3,215 annual interments at Queen of Heaven. The cemetery also contains that world's largest mausoleum.

The chapel is not very ornate, but provides for the final religious services in an interior setting free from unfavorable weather conditions.

The cemetery includes the final resting places of notables such as the children victims of the Our Lady of Angels fire; gangsters "Mad" Sam De Stefano, Tony Spilotro, Joseph Aiuppa; Fr. Jenco (Beirut hostage); George Kirby (black actor/impersonator); James Michels (flag raiser at Mt. Surabachi on Iwo Jima.) Luminaries such as Al Capone and many others are located across the street in Mt. Carmel.
