Bell tower of St John the Baptist church, Boyleston.
A Victorian addition to this 14th century church.
"A major work of restoration took place in the years 1843-4 during the incumbency of the Rev. Roger Bickerstaff. The existing gabled and slated roof replaced the former flat leaded roof of the nave, and the stone-faced tower Was constructed at the W. end of the S. aisle. The tower contains the single bell, also the clock and below it is the porch and main entrance door. Cox's susceptibilities were badly upset by this tower which he described as "strangely incongruous with a remarkable peaked roof, pertaining to no recognized style and lacking any grace of its own". Perhaps our aesthetic standards have lapsed, or perhaps time has mellowed the structure, but it does not seem to cause many people offence today. The design is certainly unusual, but not unique, as there was a very similar tower on the abbey church of Laach on the Rhine which the architect, Henry Duesbury, may have copied. Internally the chancel arch was constructed and the church repewed. All this work was carried out at a cost of £465."
