This is a courthouse benchmark, one of the most common finds benchmark hunters stumble across.

Notwithstanding the convoluted directions given on the datasheet for finding, first the courthouse, then the benchmark, it is in the top step of the main entrance on the south side of the building, in the left hand corner, less than a foot from the walls. A tall ashtray stands on top of it these days. The courthouse itself is on the north side of Main Street/Highway 191, between 7th and 8th avenues.

ABOUT 0.2 MILE WEST ALONG THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY FROM THE STATION AT LEWISTOWN, THENCE 0.4 MILE SOUTHEAST ALONG 3RD AVENUE NORTH, THENCE 0.3 MILE SOUTHWEST ALONG U. S. HIGHWAY 87, IN SECTION 15, T 15 N, R 18 E, SET IN THE TOP OF THE SOUTHEAST END OF THE CONCRETE LANDING AT THE TOP OF THE STEPS LEADING TO THE SOUTHEAST ENTRANCE OF THE COUNTY COURTHOUSE, 5 1/2 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST EDGE OF THE DOOR AT THE ENTRANCE, 0.8 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE SOUTHEAST FACE OF THE BUILDING, AND ABOUT 6 FEET ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE HIGHWAY.
