Jahrhundert nachhaltig.

At the Vienna Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery), the conspicuous tomb of Adolf Loos is found in group 0, row 1, Nr. 105. The design was made by himself. The basis consists of 9 cuboids on which a large cuboid is placed. The inscription consists only of the name "Adolf Loos" in red letters. Thus one can also see from his gravestone that he was not interested in ornaments.

Adolf Loos:

Loos, Adolf, * 10. 12. 1870 Brno (Brno, Czech Republic), † 23. 8. 1933 Vienna, architect and critic.

Studied in Dresden, stayed in the USA in 1893-96 and settled down in Vienna, where he was strongly influenced by the theories of Otto Wagner. In his articles around the turn of the century, he opposed the Art Nouveau and Viennese Workshop ("Ornament und Verbrechen" [Ornament and crime], 1908).

A stiff public discussion arose around the house at Michaelerplatz in Vienna (1909-11); At the same time Loos built private villas, by means of which he developed his "spatial plan" (distribution of spaces above the ground plan, in size and volume according to their function) in 1904-10. The exterior form of his villas developed Loos more and more into the clear cube (Hausmüller, Prague 1928-30). Nevertheless, his most famous project is a high-rise in the form of a Doric column (competition for the office building of the "Chicago Tribune", 1922).

In 1924-28 Loos lived in the scene of the Parisian avant-garde (house for T. Tzara, Paris 1925-26). His designs, like his writings, had a lasting effect on the development of architecture in the 20th century.
