Between the 1690's and the 1720's Nassau was at the center of piracy in the western Atlantic Ocean. In 1696 the privateer Henry Every landed his ship, the Fancy, in Nassau Harbor. It was filled with plunder taken from Indian Empire trade ships. Henry Every bribed the Governor of The Bahamas Nicholas Trott to established Nassau as a base where pirates could operate safely.

The Pirates of Nassau Museum offers an interactive experience. It contains a reproduction of a Nassau dock as it looked in 1716. There is also a reproduction of a pirate ship, the Revenge. The
museum includes authentic pirate artifacts such as: cutlasses and flintlock pistols as well exhibits about Blackbeard, Woodes Rogers, and the woman pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read.
