Die Michaelskapelle, ein hochmittelalterlicher sakraler Bau in Nachbarschaft der Pfarrkirche St. Albert, erlebt augenscheinlich gerade seine letzten Jahre - und das, weil es an Geld fehlt. Ein Bauzaun verhindert aus Sicherheitsgründen, sich dem Gebäude auf seinem ungepflegten Areal zu nähern. Schon länger hat es den Anschein, die Zeitzeugin der Stadtgeschichte sei aufgegeben worden. Sicher ist, dass sich ihre Sehenswürdigkeit verabschiedet hat.
„Ehemalige Friedhofskapelle St. Michael des Augustinerinnenklosters St. Maria vor den Toren, spätromanischer Tuffquaderbau, um 1210/1220“: So wird sie im Verzeichnis der Kulturdenkmäler der Generaldirektion Kulturelles Erbe RLP beschrieben. Zur Geschichte des historischen Sakralbaus ist überliefert, dass vor 200 Jahren ein Koblenzer Rheinzollinspektor die Ruinen der Abtei St. Thomas ersteigerte.
Neun Jahre zuvor war das große Augustinerinnenkloster „Unserer Lieben Frau vor den Mauern“ (gegründet 1127, seit 1482 mit dem Zusatz St. Thomas), das 1786 in ein Damenstift umgewandelt worden war, niedergebrannt. Nur deren frühere Friedhofskapelle blieb unversehrt und erinnert mit dem „Wasserturm“, dem ehemaligen Wehrturm der Klostermauer, an die Zeit des frommen Lebens an der heutigen Breitestraße. Die Säkularisation läutete für den Kapellenbau der rheinischen Spätromanik ein wechselvolles Schicksal ein: Zunächst diente er als Rohstofflager einer Gerberei, danach als Aufbewahrungsort für tobsüchtige Insassen der neuen Provinzial-Irrenanstalt. Erst ab 1853 bis zum Erwerb des Geländes durch die Stadt 1919 diente die Michaelskapelle wieder dem Gottesdienst.
Schon der Koblenzer Architekt der preußischen Rheinprovinz, Johann Claudius von Lassaulx (1781-1848,) bezeichnete die Kapelle als „merkwürdig und von besonderem Kunstwerte“. Vor einigen Jahren wurde die Michaelskapelle noch vom Schulzentrum für meditative Zwecke genutzt.
Antworten auf die an den Verwaltungsrat der Pfarrgemeinde St. Albert zur konkreten Sanierungslage gestellten Fragen liegen bisher noch nicht vor. Kulturamtsleiter Dr. Klaus Schäfer: „Auch ich bedauere den derzeitigen Zustand des Baudenkmals sehr. Meines Wissens ist die Michaelskapelle im Besitz der Kirchengemeinde St. Albert. Ich weiß, dass seit mehr als 20 Jahren über eine Sanierung gesprochen wird, auch mit der kirchlichen Baudenkmalpflege in Trier, ohne dass konkrete Taten erfolgen. Vielleicht kann in diesem Fall wirklich nur noch eine Bürgerinitiative oder ein Förderverein helfen.“ Der Historiker Dr. Helmut Weinand zeigte sich angesichts des Erscheinungsbilds des ehemaligen Kleinods ebenfalls betroffen. Einen Ortstermin mit dem engagierten und bekannten Andernacher wird es in Kürze geben. Ein Blick in das Denkmalschutzgesetz von Rheinland-Pfalz lässt zwar Verpflichtungen für Eigentümer von denkmalgeschützten Gebäuden erkennen, aber auch gesetzliche Zugeständnisse, wenn sich eine Sanierung als nicht „zumutbar“ erweist. Zudem ist im Paragraf 23 eine Sonderregelung für Kirchen formuliert."

Answers to the questions posed to the administrative board of the parish of St. Albert on the concrete renovation situation are not yet available. Head of Culture, Dr. Klaus Schäfer: "I also regret the current state of the architectural monuments. To my knowledge, the Michaelskapelle is owned by the church community of St. Albert. I know that for more than 20 years there has been talk of a rehabilitation, also with the church monument preservation in Trier, without concrete acts taking place. Perhaps in this case really only a citizens' initiative or a support association can help. "The historian Dr. Helmut Weinand was also affected by the appearance of the former gem. A local meeting with the committed and well-known Andernacher will soon be. A glance at the Rhineland-Palatinate Protection Act allows us to recognize obligations for owners of listed buildings as well as legal concessions if a renovation proves not to be "reasonable".
